Summary

The ICF (2001) recognizes participation as an outcome for therapy or educational interventions for children, adults and families. It is vital to provide appropriate information, define goals and discuss means jointly thus empowering families and disabled people for decision making. These principles are highlighted by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (2006) and underly the increasing involvement of families within the EACD conference e.g. jointly chaired sessions. The first family forum was organized at EACD in Paris 2019 to bring families from different European countries together to discuss their personal experiences in caring for children with disabilities. Now, two linked mini-symposiums involving parents, families and individuals with disabilities, professionals and those concerned will address the issue of transition to adulthood.
